On the May 19, 2021 episode of WebRTC Live, Arin Sime was joined by Manik Sachdeva, Director of Engineering at Around. They discussed building the future of collaborative audio and video experiences. Previously a Software Engineering Manager at Vonage, Manik led the development of video APIs for web, mobile, and desktop applications.

“Are meeting tools dead?” asks Arin. “No, but meetings are.” Manik explains why he believes this is so and provides insight into the features, technologies, talent, and tech stacks that Around is employing to keep us connected in the new normal of collaborative and hybrid work environments.

Manik introduced the floating head and campfire concepts and discussed the importance of noise and echo suppression, as well as the audio-only meeting experience. He also shared the decisions behind using Electron to build their native desktop app, Chromium, and Mediasoup as their SFU.

At the end of his presentation, Manik answered questions about the impact of ultrasonic audio, ensuring low latency, color filtering and the UI aspect, scaling Mediasoup, use cases based on architecture, mobile deployment, load balancers, concurrent calls, and the announcement at Google I/O about Project Starline.
